Treatment of Folliculitis

Treatment of folliculitis through phage therapy: excellent results achieved.

Difficulty in treating folliculitis.

An increasing number of patients suffering from folliculitis are facing therapeutic deadlocks. However, the treatment of folliculitis through phage therapy is now yielding excellent results.

What is a folliculitis?

Folliculitis is an infection of the hair follicles. It can be caused by viruses, parasites, fungi (fungi), but it is most often bacterial. The bacteria responsible for folliculitis are usually Staphylococcus aureus (golden staph) and less commonly Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

This condition often heals on its own, but it can sometimes become chronic and take years to disappear, or it may never go away. The most common treatment is antibiotics (topical clindamycin).

Phage therapy can be used to treat these infections when they are bacterial.

How are folliculitis treated?

In the case of phage therapy, a bacterial sample needs to be taken, identified, and a phagogram (a test to determine the phages' sensitivity to the bacteria in order to isolate the most effective ones) is conducted, as is done in any phage therapy treatment.

Afterward, the dermatologist will apply the phages daily through mesotherapy for about two weeks. Mesotherapy involves injecting small doses of medication under the skin using a specialized electronic gun or needle. A mesotherapy session can involve several hundred injections. This technique is not painful. In the case of folliculitis, mesotherapy entails injecting phages just beneath the skin at a shallow depth. By doing so, the phages are closer to the infection, allowing for better targeting and ultimately healing the patients.

Once this treatment is completed, the patient can return home and continue the treatment themselves. This involves daily ingestion of phages for a period of 1 to 3 months and applying phages to the scalp for the same duration. Subsequently, the patient takes breaks in this treatment regimen, as determined by the doctors based on the severity of the infection, in order to prevent the bacteria from developing resistance to the phages.
